International Overdose Awareness Day

International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) is observed annually on August 31st. IOAD is a global campaign to raise awareness about overdoses, remembering those we have lost to overdose, and acknowledging the grief of families and friends left behind. IOAD also seeks to reduce the stigma associated with drug-related deaths and promote an understanding of the impact of overdoses on individuals, families, and communities.

The theme for International Overdose Awareness Day 2025 is “One big family, driven by hope.” This theme emphasizes the importance of unity, compassion, and collective action in addressing the overdose crisis that has consumed the world.

On this day, individuals and organizations around the world participate in various campaigns, including:

  • Holding awareness events and gatherings

  • Sharing stories of those who we have lost to overdose

  • Educating the public about overdose prevention and intervention, including the use of Naloxone

  • Advocating for evidence-based overdose prevention policies and reforms

  • Wearing purple and the silver ribbon

  • Supporting those affected by overdose and promoting recovery

International Overdose Awareness Day is an important opportunity to reflect and commit to working together to prevent future tragedies. Refer to the resources below to learn more about IOAD, signs of an overdose, and more!
